The apartment is located in the Oltrarno district in the historic center of Florence. The name "Oltrarno" means "beyond the Arno" and this district that extends along the south bank of the river represents a different facet of Florence than that of the area near the Duomo.
The Oltrarno probably displays the true character of Florence and is generally a little quieter, greener and more relaxed than other parts of Florence. Indeed, many tourists prefer the Oltrarno for this reason.
Traditionally a district of artisans, the Oltrarno now has many antique shops and artisan workshops (especially furniture and leather goods) and Via Maggio remains the center of the flourishing trade of antique dealers in Florence.
Over time, the Oltrarno became a rather chic neighborhood and many aristocrats chose this neighborhood to build their villas and palaces, the largest of which was the Pitti Palace, which became the home of the various great -ducs.
Today, this sumptuous palace is home to several important museums that rank among the best in Florence. The other major attractions of the Oltrarno are the Cappella Brancacci with its fabulous frescoes, Piazzale Michelangelo with its breathtaking views of Florence, the magnificent church of San Miniato, (one of the highest points in the city of Florence and also the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Tuscany) with Florence's most famous and oldest bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, which houses a sparkling array of jewelery and goldsmiths.
Stretching along the hill from the Pitti Palace, are the official Boboli Gardens, an open-air garden sculpture museum that includes Roman antiquities as well as works from the 16th and 17th centuries.
The Oltrarno is famous for its wine bars such as Olio & Convivium, authentic trattorias serving typical Tuscan cuisine, including Il Santo Bevitore, I 4 Leoni, and Il Magazzino, not to mention the wonderful fresh produce market which is held all mornings in Piazza Santo Spirito. For those who choose an apartment in this area, the Oltrarno neighborhood also offers a variety of grocery stores, bakeries, bakeries, gift shops, and much more.
