Take advantage of his professional stay in Hannover to discover the city

Since the Middle Ages, Hannover has been a city of fairs and trade. During the second half of the 19th century, it underwent a considerable industrial expansion. At the end of the Second World War, the city was devastated, the buildings were in ruins. Reconstruction is proceeding quickly. Nevertheless, the tradition of fairs has continued, as the city is still known for its large trade fairs and the highly renowned events organised there every year, such as the Maschsee festival or the Schützenfest, the annual festival of archery clubs. Beyond this very dynamic activity, Hannover is a veritable jewel of greenery, which makes it a privileged city to combine business and rejuvenation. Whether you are there for an appointment or to attend a congress, whether you decide to extend your stay for a weekend or whether you are going on a long mission, here are some ideas to make the most of your professional stay in Hannover.

Discover the city by following the common thread!

This 4.2 km route, marked by a red line painted on the city's sidewalks, allows you to discover Hannover through 36 essential places. Beginning of the visit to the Tourist Office (do not hesitate to get the explanatory brochure to learn more about the different centres and places of interest that dot this route) then just follow the common thread! On the programme, there are not only essential monuments of the city but also stops, notably at Kramerstrasse, which is a cross drawn on the ground from which you can simultaneously observe the towers of the 4 churches in the city centre. An original and surprising visit.

Recharge your batteries in this green city

Running or hiking enthusiasts will enjoy getting some fresh air in contact with this green environment. The municipal woods, the walks along the Mittellandkanal and the Leine promise a total change of scenery. The 300-year-old royal gardens of Herrenhausen are one of Hanover's main attractions. The cave of the visual artist and sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle and the Baroque inspired Grand Jardin, which are located there, attract tourists from all over the world. Many outdoor events are organized there from spring onwards. For animal lovers, visit the Erlebnis-Zoo Hannover, which houses 3300 animals!

Immerse yourself in picturesque Hannover in the heart of the historic centre

In the middle of the Marktplatz (market square) in the centre of the old town, you will be amazed by the beautiful half-timbered houses and the old town hall, a Gothic brick building built in 1410, next door is the Lutheran church Marktkirche (market church) with its 97 metre high bell tower, also entirely in brick, which offers an incredible view over the city. Continue through picturesque Hannover to the wood market where the house of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, a famous philosopher, mathematician and physicist who lived in Hannover for over 40 years and honoured the city, is located. The house is not the original residence of Leibniz, destroyed during the war, it was rebuilt on this square. Then discover, in rue Burg, the oldest bourgeois house with a facade dating back to 1566 and the oldest church in the city dating back to 1333. Finally, admire the Ballhof, built between 1649 and 1664 to be a place for sporting events, this establishment now hosts concerts and plays. It is a cultural place very appreciated by the inhabitants of the city.

Admire the new City Hall

Inaugurated on June 20, 1913, the new City Hall is a majestic building. Renowned for its prowess and innovations in terms of construction, in particular its inclined elevator with a 17-degree angle that leads to the dome. From this spot, 93 metres high, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the whole city and the surrounding nature. Different areas of City Hall host exhibitions throughout the year. 4 models of the city at 4 different periods are presented: in the Middle Ages, before the Second World War, at the end of it and at the end of the current city.

Visit the Sprengel Museum

The Sprengel Museum Hannover is dedicated to modern art. It was opened in 1979 thanks to Bernhard Sprengel's collection, which contained many pieces by modern French painters and German expressionists. Among others, there are works by Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Fernand Léger, Paul Klee and Max Ernst.

Enjoy a beer and a local speciality

Join the German tradition by enjoying a draught beer in one of the city's open-air breweries, such as the Lister Turm Biergarten, a well-known brewery in the region. You will accompany it with a traditional pretzel or bratwurst. Enjoy your meal!
