Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. Located near the Iskar River, at an altitude of 590 metres at the foot of Mount Vitocha, it has a population of 1.4 million and is both the political and cultural centre of the country. Its geostrategic position has largely contributed to its demographic expansion, now accounting for 17% of the country's population. From Roman and medieval remains to mosques and buildings of the Stalinist era, Sofia has preserved its entire history from prehistoric times to the present day.
